Golang Job Details

We’re a multi-channel, multi-brand business serving millions of customers a day, with the UK’s largest loyalty scheme and an ever-evolving set of digital platforms. All of this equals over 1.2 billion transactions each year, presenting a volume, depth and complexity of data that few can match.

We don’t think we’re exaggerating when we say we have the most exciting data set in the country. And from the insights gained, we build scalable, high-performance products using cutting-edge technology that give our customers an amazing shopping experience – like our award-winning Smartshop app. In an inclusive, agile environment, you’ll have the space to be curious, to experiment, and to solve real-world challenges. And you’ll get to see your creations in the hands of millions of people across the UK.

As an Engineer (Golang), you’ll be part of one of our Engineering teams, applying architectural and engineering principles to define and deliver technology that will better customer experiences, improve efficiency and reduce business costs, helping us to lower prices. With your technical craft, curiosity and experimentation, you’ll use judgement to apply specific techniques to deliver outcomes that support our customers.

We use a variety of tech here and you need to be willing to pick up new tools and techniques. We’d also like you to be yourself - analytical, curious and unafraid to challenge the status quo. You’ll constantly strive to improve the way things are done in your team, contributing as a progressive member of the engineering community.

More about the role

  • You’ll help to lead the design and development of large-scale high performance microservices using technologies such as Golang and Docker
  • You’ll work in a T-shaped way, doing mostly your Go specialism but have the opportunity to learn and work with our other technologies
  • You’ll contribute to the entire product development lifecycle, from roadmap, to delivery, to potential decommissioning too
  • You’ll work on and support services that enhance Sainsbury’s capabilities
  • You’ll be part of a collaborative team that highly values empathy and team spirit
  • You’ll utilise Test-Driven Development and Pair Programming by default
  • You’ll work in a lean environment to deliver early and often

More about you

  • You can write great quality Go code and can build RESTful APIs
  • You have proven experience of software design and implementation, security, cloud services and CI/CD
  • You’re driven and constantly striving to improve your own knowledge, the team and the division
  • You’re empathetic and work well with others, and you’re highly collaborative in your ways of working
  • You are an advocate of agile/lean delivery methodologies
  • You have a passion for delivering solutions to customers, owning the whole Software Development Lifecycle
  • You keep up to date with industry trends and emerging tech

As well as lots of on-the-job training and endless opportunities, you’ll get:

  • Colleague discount across our multi-brands – Sainsbury’s, Argos and Habitat
  • Holiday allowance
  • Bonus scheme
  • Pension plan
  • Special offers on gym memberships, restaurants, holidays, retail vouchers and more

Work-life balance is important to us, so we offer our colleagues as much flexibility as possible in line with the needs of their role. We trust them to decide how, where and when they work, combining remote and collaborative working with a flexible approach to hours, giving them plenty of time and space for life outside of work whilst delivering against our business goals.
